It was a whole 'nuther experience in pain, that toothache was. It was thudding with pain so badly that I could feel each beat of my heart in that tooth (can you have a tooth migraine?). I originally thought it was just a sinus headache because my jaw was also sore, but when that pain did not go away with either the sinus medicine I had taken or Advil even, the thought this is not good crossed my mind. And as the afternoon passed on and the pain did not, I thought this is really not good. By nighttime, I was almost paralyzed I do believe, and found myself actually looking forward to going to the dentist that next afternoon. "This is not good," says the dentist (I could have told him that!) that next afternoon, and he proceeds to tell me that he is going to put me on some antibiotics because "this time next week, you're going to have to have a root canal." I have to tell you that I was also, at that point, looking forward to that root canal. When the antibiotics kicked in, however, I remember thinking that maybe I didn't need a root canal after all. Then I remembered that most horrible horrific pain! ...and that overrode any other desire to cancel.
A week passed and I found myself once again in that dentist's chair being anesthetized by an "endodontist" I think he called himself .... a root canal specialist anyway (... a mighty young specialist, I might add)(... and does it really take 12 shots to get you numbed???). He then places some kind of plastic shield around that bad tooth. ...for sterility purposes I believe he said. All I know is that what it actually did was become a springboard for the water shooting out of the instruments as my face almost became washed totally by that water. (... I hope it was water!) He then proceeds to tell me every single step (... and I do mean every!) we are taking through the hour and a half procedure including cleaning out the canals - not just A canal but canals with an S. (...do we have 12 canals per tooth?) I also might mention that the sterile thing popped off my tooth at one point making me once again think (... you got it!) .... this is not good! Anyway between the drilling and the cleaning and ... is that a blow torch I hear in the background? .... the root canal (canals!) were finally finished and the tooth was sealed back up. I am not sure if the Whew! that I heard was from me, the nurse or the doctor himself. I must say, however, he was a very thorough young specialist dentist who has given me a very clean tooth, I am sure. He did a good job and got right down to the (aw, come on now ....) root of the matter. And that's exactly what we need to do too, now isn't it?! ......
Acrostic:
R - REAL! ... it is. Our very roots!
Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."
O - OH! ... NO! We sinned - and continue to sin - to the very roots!
Genesis 2:16-17 "And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, 'From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you shall surely die.' "
Genesis 3:6 "When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate."
Romans 7:15-21 "For that which I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. But if I do the very thing I do not wish to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that it is good. So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which indwells me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the wishing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. For the good that I wish, I do not do; but I practice the very evil that I do not wish. But if I am doing the very thing I do not wish, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wishes to do good."
O - OH! ... YES! God saves ... "roots"!
John 3:16-17 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world; but that the world should be saved through Him."
T - TRUTH! ... the Way and the Life! The roots of it all!
John 14:6-7 "Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.' "
ROOT! noun - 1) buried part of a plant, 2) similar part of a tooth, hair, etc., 3) basic cause, OR v.t. 4) plant, 5) dig,
OR
there is one other meaning for this word, and that is ... 6) to cheer! ... and it sounds like to me that we definitely have something to ROOT about!
